First grade students have been learning how to do subtraction with regrouping as part of the Math in Focus curriculum. To enhance their understanding and show what they know, the class decided to make a video explanation of how to solve a math problem that involves regrouping. They used the iPads to share their learning and understanding by working in two apps: Number Pieces Basic and Pixie. They built their problem in Number Pieces Basic using their tens and ones, then broke the problem into its steps and took a screenshot as they completed each step. Once the problem was complete, they imported the images into Pixie so they could then record the steps they took to solve their math problem. One of the reasons we like using "Pieces Basic" is because we can break apart a tens rod into individual ones and then change colors to show which ones were regrouped from a ten.
