Mrs. Giaccios's first grade students have been learning about math sentences and story problems. Looking for key phrases like "How many in all" and "How many are left" help the students decide what operation to perform- addition or subtraction. To practice applying what they are learning, the students created their own math sentences and stories using Pixie. There were many steps involved such as choosing the objects, deciding which operation, writing the story, then selecting the appropriate math symbols to go with it; and those are just the mathematical thinking skills! The technology skills involve selecting the application, using the track pad, manipulating the sticker folders and the drawing tools, adding text and keyboarding. Did I mention the inventive spelling?!
